NCFE Health and Fitness
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Health | A state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity |
| Mental health and wellbeing | Coping with the normal stress of life, working productively while being able to make a contribution to your community or where you live. This includes being rational and sensible in different situations |
| Physical health and wellbeing | All the body’s systems working well, so you are free from illness, and therefore able to carry out everyday tasks and complete your job or daily demands without fatigue |
| Social health and wellbeing | Basic human needs being met (e.g. clothing, food and shelter) while suffering little stress in social circumstances. An individual has friendship and support and enjoys the company of other people. |
| Fitness | The ability to cope with daily demands without suffering undue fatigue. In other words, your body is fit enough to do what it needs to do |
| 5 Health related components of fitness are: | Cardiovascular Endurance Flexibility Muscular endurance Muscular strength Body composition |
| Cardiovascular endurance | The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles |
| Flexibility | The range of movement possible at a joint |
| Muscular endurance | The ability of a muscle or muscle group to undergo repeated contractions avoiding fatigue |
| Muscular Strength | The ability to overcome a resistance. |
| 3 Types of Strength: | There are 3 types of strength: Static – maximal strength that can be applied to an immoveable object Dynamic – repeated contractions applied to a moving object Explosive – sometimes called power. A combination of strength x speed |
| Body Composition | A comparison of the percentages of bone, fat, water and muscle with the body |
| The 6 Skill-Related components are: | Agility Balance Co-ordination Power Reaction time Speed |
| Agility | The ability to move and change direction quickly (at speed) while maintaining control |
| Balance | The maintenance of the centre of mass over the base of support |
| Co-ordination | The ability to use 2 or more body parts together efficiently |
| Power | The ability to overcome a resistance with speed (strength x speed) |
| Reaction Time | The time taken to respond to a stimulus |
| Speed | The ability to move the body or body parts quickly |
