Lesson 5 Vocab TCI

TermDefinition
authority The government or controlling power.
seize To take possession of. To possess or take by force
cede (ceded) When a person of authority or power gives land or power to someone else, often as a result of military or political pressure.
militia A small army made up of ordinary citizens who are trained to fight in an emergency.
boycott To refuse to buy one or more goods from a certain source. An organized refusal by many people is also an example of this.
repeal (repealed) To take back or to cancel (a law).
restrict (restricted) To place limits or controls on something.
violation A breaking of an established rule or law.
retain To continue to keep.
tyranny The unjust use of government power.
govern To be officially in charge of the country or its people, and to have responsibility for making laws, managing the economy, and controlling public services.
massacre The killing of a large number of people at the same time in a violent and cruel way.
Patriots People who wanted to be independent from Great Britain.
Loyalists People who wanted to remain under Great Britain’s control.
