TermDefinition
Legislative Branch Branch of the government that makes the laws.
Budget A written plan for spending money.
Executive Branch Branch of government that carries out the laws.
Bill A plan for a new law.
Veto The right of a branch of government to say “no” to a bill
Judicial Branch The branch of government that makes sure laws made by the legislative branch are fair and agree with the state or federal constitution.
Jury Trial The examination in a case in which a group of citizens decides whether a person accused of a crime or other wrongdoing should be found guilty or not guilty.
Initiative An amendment to a constitution made directly by voters instead of by the legislature.
Petition Signed request for action.
Checks and Balances The system of government that requires that each branch of government must answer to the other branches
Constitution A plan for how government should work
Term The length of time that an elected official stays in office.
