Roanoke 1. First colonial settlement attempted by the English. 2. People all vanished when the english returned with supplies. 3. No one knows what happened to the sttlers - it's a MYSTERY!
Jamestown (South/Virgina) 1. First permanent and successful english settlement in the new world. 2. Struggling to survive the "Starving time", the settlers had to learn how to adapt to life in America. 3. The Colony was saved when they started to grow export tabacco.
Jamestown (South/Virgina) 2 4. Jamestown begins a tridition of self-goverment in the colonies. 5. The House Burgesses was an early form of representative government. 6. Th men of Jamestown elected people to represent them in the lawmaking process.

Pilgrims Religious group called Separatist (they wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England)
Mayflower Compact rules the pilgrims created for the colony, created fair law for all memners of the colony; form of self goverment
Town meetings 1. meetings to discuss issues within the colony 2. occurred in New england and the Middle colonies 3. Voting Rights only grated whitr, land owning, Christian, males 4. This adds to the tradition of self-govenment in the colonies
New england ( New hampshire, Massachetts, connecticut, and Rhode island) 1. Much of the soil wasn't good for growing crops, sspecially near the ocean. Also, the early and long- lasting winters killed many crops quickly. Still they grew enought food to feed their families and maybe even help feed other families.
New england ( New hampshire, Massachetts, connecticut, and Rhode island) 2 2. The main kind of food the contributed ti the economy was fish. They fished & whaled. Jobs were based on many harbors along the cost. They used trees from the forest for lumber, much of which was used to build ships.
New england ( New hampshire, Massachetts, connecticut, and Rhode island) 3 3. Because jobs along the coat brought people together, they lived close together in towns and cities. That allowed fro public school fro the children and town meetings where their voice could be heard
Middle colonies( New york, New jersy, Pennsylvania, Delaware) 1. The soil was fertial and they had a longer growing season. They grow wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. They were called the "breadbaskets" because they grow so much food.
Middle colonies( New york, New jersy, Pennsylvania, Delaware) 2 2. Wheat was ground to make flour, and bouth wheat and flour were sold in other colonies or in Europe. It was diverse region. Settlers came from many countries like the netherlands (Dutch), Germany and Sweden.
Middle colonies( New york, New jersy, Pennsylvania, Delaware) 3 3. Because of its diversity, they belived in toleration - the acceptance of poeple from different places with different religious beliefs. Indentured Servants.
Southern Colonies (The Ladies: Maryland, Virginia. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) 1. The soil was the richest in the colonies. The growing season was the longest. Hot & humid climate. Soil & climate conditions allowed southerners to grow cash crops. These are crops that are sold for a tremendous profit around the world.
Southern Colonies (The Ladies: Maryland, Virginia. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) 2 2. Tobacco was the most valuable crop. Farming happened on huge farms called plantations. Plantation owners were some of the wealthiest people in the world.
Southern Colonies (The Ladies: Maryland, Virginia. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) 3 3. They lived too far apart to have schools; children were tutored at home or sent to private school in Europe. In order to maximize profits, they used slaves from Africa to plant and harvest crops.
Southern Colonies (The Ladies: Maryland, Virginia. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) 4 4. They did not pay slaves, and they did not treat slaves like equal citizens, and their treatment of them was harsh and inhuman.
Mercantilism The belief that colonies exist only to benefit the mother country. England: Colonizing Country (Mother Country). England received cheap raw materials from the colonies, then sold manufactured products at a higher price.
Triangular Trade The pattern of trade that developed between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Rum, Sugar, Slaves made up one of the most tragic yet valuable ‘triangles’.
The Middle Passage The horrific journey slaves were forced to take after being taken/kidnapped from Africa and taken to America -very unsanitary/unsafe/horrible conditions
Early Examples of Self-Government and Representative Government in the Colonies The House of Burgesses (Jamestown) The Mayflower Compact (Plymouth) Town Meetings (New England) The League of the Iroquois (Native Americans)
