Who first attempted to colonize North America. First colonial settlement attempted by the English.
What was the first permanent and successful English settlement in the New World. Jamestown.
Who were the pilgrims? A religious group called Separatists (they wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England).
What was the Mayflower compact? Rules the Pilgrims created for the colony, created fair laws for all members of the colony; a form of self-government.
What did the pilgrims face in England? They faced religious persecution in England.
What did the puritans want? The Puritans wanted to purify, or reform, the Church of England from within
Where did the pilgrims settle? Plymouth.
Traits of New England colonies. Soil not good for farming, early and long lasting winters kill crops, Mainly distributes fish, they fished and whaled, and Lumbering for shipbuilding was effective.
Traits of Middle colonies. Good soil and long growing season, very diverse region, believed in toleration, and indentured Servants.
Traits of southern colonies. Richest soil of all colonies and long growing season, including growing a lot of cash crops, they maximize profit using Africa slaves, slaves aren't treated well and not paid.
What was the Triangular trade? The pattern of trade that developed between Europe, Africa, and the Americas. (they traded rum,sugar, slaves are most important)
What was the Middle passage? The horrific journey slaves were forced to take after being taken from Africa and taken to America, Horrible conditions.
What is Mercantilism? The belief that colonies exist only to benefit the mother country
What is the Navigation Act? stated that all goods must be carried on English ships, all goods had to be taxed by England then sold to the colonies.
Social means... Religion, Interactions between people, beliefs, traditions,
Economic means... Having to do with jobs, production of goods, & trade
Political means... Anything having to do with government
