Trade Deficit The amount by which the cost of a country's imports exceeds the value of its exports.
Opium A highly addictive non-synthetic narcotic that is extracted from the poppy plant
Opium Wars The Opium Wars were two conflicts between China and Western powers during the 19th century.
Extraterritoriality The immunities for foreign states or international organizations and their people to be excused form the other country's laws
Treaty of Nanjing Treaty that ended the first Opium War, the first of the unequal treaties between China and foreign imperialist powers.
Tai Ping Rebellion A massive rebellion and civil war that was waged in China between the Manchu-led Qing dynasty
Self-strengthening Was a period of radical institutional reforms initiated in China during the late Qing dynasty
Spheres of influence A spatial region or concept division over which a state or organization has a level of cultural, economic, military or political exclusivity.
Exclusive Restricted or limited to the person, group, or area concerned.
Open door policy The United States diplomatic policy that called for a system of equal trade and investment and to guarantee the territorial integrity of Qing China
Indemnity security or protection against a loss or other financial burden.
Boxer Rebellion An anti-foreign, anti-colonial, and anti-Christian uprising in China between 1899 and 1901
