What article talks about and explains the powers of congress? Article One
How is the number of representatives each state gets determined? It is based on their population.
WHat is the total number of representatives that are divided by the 50 states in the House of Representatives 435
What is a Census? A count of a nation's population.
What is Reapportionment? The redistribution of seats in the House of Representatives.
What is Gerrymandering? The redrawing of voting districts to favor one party over the other.
What is Cracking? The redrawing of districts to divide a certain group of voters.
What is Packing? The redrawing of districts to group together a votes of a certain affiliation
What are the qualifications to be a member of the House of Representatives, how long is their term, and how long do they have to be an American citizen? They must be at least 25 years old, a citizen of the US for seven years, and a resident of the state they are running for. Their term is 2 years.
What is an incumbent? Why do they have the advantage at times? The incumbent is the previous/latest holder of a seat. They have an advantage because voters are more likely to continue with the status quo.
How is the leader of the House chosen? All members of the two respective main parties in the House get together to choose their own representatives.
What are the duties and powers of the Speaker? They permit certain motions, control discussion, counting votes, and electing Speaker pro Tempore.
What are the duties and responsibilites of the majority leaders of each house of Congress They campaign on behalf of their party, assure attendance, make sure their party votes the right way, and assisting the floor leader.
What are the duties and responsibilites of the majority and minority whips in each house of Congress? Aiding party leadership by supporting bills on the floor, persuading party members to vote for their position, and maintaining communication between leadership and members of the party.
iHow many Senators are selected from each state? 2
How many total Senators are there? 100
What are the qualifications to be a member of the Senate and how long is their term? At least 30 years old, a US citizenship of 9 years, and residency in the state a senator represents at the time of an election. They serve six year terms.
Who is the leader of the Senate and how long is their term? The majority leader, and their term is generally 2 years.
Who takes over is the Vice President is not able to attend and fulfill his obligations to the senate? The president pro tempore
What are Congress's powers in regard to the military? They have the ultimate ability to declare war, or call for the president to return it if it is not extended or allowed after a 60 day period.
Who determines the winner of the presidential election if no one reaches the 270 number? The House of Representatives chooses the president.
Popular Sovereignty A government based on the people and majority beliefs
Federalism A government divided on national, state, and local levels
Separation of Powers The division of power amongst three branches of government
Checks and Balances The ability of each branch to check the others
Judicial Review The ability of the judicial branch to review the constituionality of a law
Limited Government A government without unlimited power; not all-powerful
What are the qualifications to be President of the United States? 35 years of age, natural-born US citizen, and a resident of the US for 14 years.
How is the president elected? The electoral colege
How are each state's electoral college votes determined? In 48 states, the candidate with a majority of the votes receives all of a state's EC votes.
How many electoral college votes will win the election? 270
Who determines the winner of the election if there is a tie or someone does not reach 270? The House of Representatives
What is the "winner take all" system? A system where the majority candidate of a state receives all of its Electoral College votes
How long is a presidential term? 4 YEars
How many terms and/or years can a president serve? 2 terms, or 10 years.
What amendment set the limits on how long a President can serve? The 22nd Amendment
What happens if a president cannot serve due to illness, mental incapacity, not abiding to law, or death? The Vice President takes over
What amendment takes the power from the President and gives it to the Vice President? 25th Amendment
What is Presidential Succession? The line of succession in case the president or his successors are compromised
If the President were to be unseated what are the first four in the order of succession Vice President, Speaker of the House, President Pro Tempore, and the Secretary of State
Who is the first non-elected official to become President? Secretary of State
What is the President's job as Chief Executive and what is he in charge of? Presiding over the entire executive branch and its 2 million employees. May declare executive orders.
What is an executive order? An order from the President that bypasses Congress. It can only be removed by a president.
In regards to federal judges, what is the President's job? He can suggest judges for the Supreme Court.
What is a pardon? The President relieving someone of their jail time
What is a reprieve? The President temporarily extending or pausing a sentence if he believes there is more to look into
What is Amnesty? The pardoning of a large group of people
What is the War Powers Act? It limited the President's ability to make war without Congress support
How is the President the legislative leader? He can suggest or support bills in Congress
What is Foreign Policy? The relations of one nation with other nations
What are the goals of Foreign Policy? Maintaining or strengthening international relations with other nations
What is an executive agreement and does this need Congressional approval? An executive agreement is an agreement with a foreign nation not attached to a treaty. Does not need Congress approval.
Appointing ambassadors is another Presidental job? What is an ambassador? It is a representative of one nation to other nations.
