Constitution Vocab

TermDefinition
Constitution a document ratified in 1788, made up of 27 amendments and a bill of rights. The united states fundamental state of laws. 3 branches
Federalists People who supported the Constitution, led by Alexander Hamilton and John Adams. Wanted a strong central government
Anti-Federalists People who did not support the Constitution, wanted a weaker central government.
Bill of rights The first 10 amendments, guaranteed rights. Written by James Madison. Written because of Anti-federalists who wanted set rights.
3/5 compromise Compromise that slaves would count as 3/5 of a person to determine representation in the House of representation.
Great Compromise Defined what representation each state would have in the House of representatives.
Executive Branch Carries out laws, includes the President and his cabinet.
Judicial Branch Interprets laws, includes congress and local courts
Legislative Branch Makes laws, includes Senate and House of representatives
James Madison Wrote the Bill of rights, known as the Father of the Constitution
George Mason Antifederalist and founding father
Patrick Henry Anti federalist. Said "I smell a rat and its monarchy".
William Blackstone Influenced American government, English judge
Charles de Montesquieu Source of the theory "Separation of Powers." English philosopher
Magna Carta First document to put into writing that the king has to abide the laws
English Bill of rights encouraged a form of government where the peoples individual rights were protected.
