| Geography | Study of the earth and its people |
| globe | a sphere that represents Earth's entire surface --- most realistic representation of earth |
| map | A two-dimensional, or flat, representation of Earth's surface or a portion of it. |
| political map | A map showing units such as countries, states, provinces, districts, etc. Each is normally a different color |
| physical map | A map that shows mountains, hills, plains, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc. |
| thematic map | a map that emphasizes a single idea or a particular kind of information about an area |
| cartographer | a person who makes maps |
| 5 themes of geography | Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, Region |
| Location | The position of anything on Earth's surface. |
| absolute location | The exact position of a place on the earth's surface. |
| relative location | The position of a location in relationship to another place, landmark, or land feature |
| Latitude | Distance north or south of the equator RUN: East to West MEASURE:North to South |
| Longitude | Distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees RUN: North to South MEASURE: East to West |
| Parallels | lines of latitude |
| Meridian | a line of longitude |
| Equator | An imaginary circle around the middle of the earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole --- zero degree latitude |
| Prime Meridian | The meridian, designated at 0° longitude, separates the earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres |
| place | A specific point on Earth distinguished by distinct natural/physical features and human features |
| Human Characteristics (features) | geographic features that were made by people ---roads, buildings, culture, language |
| Physical/Natural characteristics (features) | features of the earth's surface, such as landforms, water systems, climate patterns, and plant and animal life |
| Region | an area of Earth distinguished by a common features or similarities |
| Human Environment Interaction | The geographic theme that explores how people use, adapt to, and modify the environment |
| Movement | The geographic theme that explores how people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another |

| compass rose | A tool on a map showing cardinal (N,E,S,W) and intermediate (NE,SE,NW,SW) directions. |
| cardinal directions | North, South, East, West |
| intermediate directions | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| map key/legend | explains the lines, symbols, and colors used on a map |
| scale | the relationship between the portion of Earth being studied and Earth as a whole |
| global grid | a network of horizontal and vertical lines that provide coordinates for locating points on a map |
| hemisphere | half of the earth |
| geographer | a person who studies the regions of the earth, including the climates and natural resources |
| continent | large landmass. There are 7 |
| ocean | areas of salty water on the Earth's surface. There are 5 |
| Physical Geography | the study of the earth's natural and physical features like landsforms, climate, bodies of water |
| Human Geography | the study of how people interact with the earth like culture, migration patterns, or population |
| culture | way of life |
| natural resources | materials from the earth that people use to meet their needs and support life. Some examples are water, trees, animals, minerals |
