Federal system | A system of government in which the power is shared by the national and the state governments. |

Separation of powers | The division of powers between the three branches of the national government. |
Veto | To reject a bill and prevent it from becoming a law |

Checks and balances | A system that keeps each branch of government from becoming too powerful or misusing its power |
Representative Democracy | A system of government in which citizens elect representatives, or leaders, to make decisions about the laws for all the people. |
Powers of the Federal Government | to print money to declare war to create an army to make treaties |
Powers of State Government | Establish and maintain schools set up local governments run elections make traffic laws |
Shared powers between the states and national government | Establish courts Collect taxes from citizens |
State Power | Power not exclusively (only) given to the federal government is shared and given to the states |
"We the People" | The idea that government is given its power by the people |
Natural Rights | the idea that all humans are born with rights, which include the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness |
Why did people want the Bill of Rights added to the Constitution? | They were afraid a strong, national government would take away their rights like the tyrant, King George III |
Bill of Rights is added to the Constitution because | some Founding Fathers felt the Constitution did not do enough to protect individual rights. |
Executive Branch | Branch of government that: Enforces laws Vetoes proposed laws (bills) commands the armed forces |
Judicial Branch | Branch of government that decides if laws are carried out fairly. |
The Legislative Branch | The branch of government that makes and passes the laws - Made up of Congress - the Senate and the House of Representatives |
First Amendment | Constitutional amendment (Bill of Rights) that guarantees 5 freedoms: speech, press, religion, assembly, petition |
Bill of Rights, 1791 | First 10 amendments (additions or changes) to the Constitution, needed to get all delegates to ratify the Constitution |
Constitution vs. Articles of Confederation | Constitution: Strong central government, Power to tax, Articles of Confederation: States had the power, no power to tax |
Popular Sovereignty | A government in which the people rule by their own consent, government gets it's power from the people WE THE PEOPLE |
Violate | To break a law, to go against a freedom (________ violates my first amendment right) |
