Bayonet Constitution (1887) Hawaii League forces king Kalakaua to sign constitution - limits monarchy power and voting rights of natives
What happened to Queen Liliuokalani? 1. 1893 - she wants constitution that favors natives 2. Hawaiian League create "Committee of Safety" & asks for US troops bc they say the queen is a threat to American safety 3. Create provisional gov led by Sanford Dole & force queen to give up thrown
Did Pres Grover Cleveland support annexation? no, sends James Blount to lead investigation, and finds overthrowing was wrong
What happened to Sanford Dole? 1894- prov gov makes Hawaii a republic & Dole becomes president of Hawaii
What did Mckinley do? 1897 - replaces Cleveland & pushed for annexation
