Articles of Confederation Gave power to the States
Nullification Started in 1830s when a fight over tariffs had begun. The north had a high tariff/tax on Great Britain imports. South Carolina became very upset over the tariff.
Missouri Compromise 1st compromise, allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state and Maine as a free state. This would keep the balance equal.
Compromise of 1850 California wanted to enter so 2 senators came together to write this. California would enter the Union as a free state, but in return Congress would pass the Fugitive Slave Act.
Fugitive Slave Act It stated that any runaway slave caught in the north would be returned to its owner.
Georgia Platform Georgia was unsure of these acts because they felt it would throw off the balance of free vs slave states. Alexander Stephens and Robert Toombs came up with the platform to give the southern states, state rights to have slavery. Delayed the Civil War.
Dred Scott Missouri slave who was taken to the free states of Illinois and Wisconsin by his master. It was ruled he was not a U.S citizen, and he didn't even have the right to sue.
Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell all ran for presidency in 1860 with Abraham Lincoln winning. After 3 days of debating, they decided to leave the Union on January 19th, 1861.
Result of the 1860 Election Joseph E. Brown said to leave the Union leading to Alexander Stephens being voted Vice President of the Confederacy.
Union Blockade The North blocked the Georgia coast, so that they were unable to ship cotton to France and England. Most important strategy was the General Winfield Scott Union Blockade, and it was often called the Anaconda plan hinting at strangling the Confederates.
Blockade Runners Citizens willing to risk going through a blockade for a very large sum of profit.
Battle of Antietam It was the bloodiest 1 day battle of the Civil War on September 17th, 1862. This victory for the Union meant that Abraham Lincoln could finally issue the Emancipation Proclamation.
Emancipation Proclamation This freed the slaves in states that went against the Union, so they freed slaves in Confederate states such as Georgia.
Battle of Chickamauga Major battle lasting 3 days (Sept 18-Sept 21). Chickamauga was important because it was close to Chattanooga (North's goal city to capture). The Confederates won the Battle of Chickamauga. Largest Union defeat in the Western Theater.
Chattanooga It was a very major railroad town , and they would then lead onto trying to capture Atlanta. It was another huge deal because it was the jumping off point for William T. Sherman, and his plan
William T. Sherman Sometime referred to as the most hated man in history with his trek through Georgia having a major social economic and political impact.
Sherman's Atlanta Campaign He wanted to capture Atlanta, and by September 1864 the Confederacy withdrew from Atlanta leaving it completely open for Union takeover. He held Atlanta for 2 months while planning his next attack in November, Sherman left Atlanta. Atlanta caught on fire.
Sherman's March to the Sea Goal was to end the war and punish the South. He wanted to destroy the spirit of the South.
Savannah Savannah surrendered not wanting to have the same fate as Atlanta. Savannah was then given to Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas present along with 25,000 bales of cotton.
Andersonville Fort Summer is the official name, and it was the most notorious Confederate Prisoner of War camp. The only water source was an infested creek. Captain Henry Wirz was later executed for the poor conditions located inside the prison.
