internet | the physical network of computers connected together by phone lines, cable lines, and wireless communications |
telecommute | used by workers- computers , and eventually cell phones were used for telecommunication |
welfare reform act | limited people to no more than two consecutive years on welfare and required them to work to receive welfare benefits. Also increased childcare spending and gave tax breaks to companies that hired new employees who had been on welfare. |
global warming | an increase in average world temperature over time. in 1990s, scientists found evidence of global warming- this leads to more droughts and extreme weather |
ENIAC | first electronic digital computer- went into operation in Feb 1946 -weighed over 30 tons, and was the size of a small house |
dot.com | companies that made millions of dollars for stock investors without making any actual profit... in 2000 there was a "dot.com bust" and many companies went out of business |
perjury | telling a lie in a court after having taken an oath for affirmation. -Clinton committed perjury about the relationship between him and the white house intern Monica Lewinsky. |
migration chains | were established during the act of 1965. As newcomers acquired US citizenship, they too could send for relatives in their home country. causing chains of immigrating families to come to the US |
amnesty | a pardon to those who have committed an offense- this program was made to eliminate the problem of illegals |
immigration reform & control act | established penalties for employers who knowingly hire unauthorized immigrants. Also strengthened border controls to prevent illegal entry into US |
globalism | the world becoming increasingly interconnected by technology...nothing is unknown |
contract with America | 10 major changes- lower taxes, welfare reform, tougher anti- crime laws, term limits for members of congress, and a balanced budget amendment. confessional republican Newt Gingrich created this. it gave republicans majority in both houses of congress |
CFCs | chlorofluorocarbons which had the ability to break down the ozone layer- they were widely used in refrigerators and air conditioners |
Americorps | put students to work improving low-income housing, teaching children to read, and cleaning up the environment... incorporated VISTA program |
impeachment | a charge of misconduct made against a holder of public office -Clinton was almost impeached for perjury, and obstruction of justice |
Euro | A common European currency for member nations |
Brady Bill | Named after James Brady, imposed a waiting period before people could buy hand guns. required a background check |
ARPANET | U.S. defense departments Advanced Research Project Agency Network. created a system of networked computers- linked computers of government agencies, defense contractors, and universities allowing communication |
free-trade-zone | NAFTA joined Canada, U.S., and Mexico in a free-trade-zone. Goods could be transported/traded without involvement of customs agencies |
ethnic cleansing | brutal expulsion of an ethnic group from a geographic area |

silicon | used to make a transistor, a chip that has a complete electronic circuit |
integrated circuit | a complete electronic circuit on a single chip of silicon |
Kenn Starr | part of the independent council, a former federal judge, appointed to investigate Clinton, concluded that Clinton obstructed justice, abused his power as president, and committed perjury |

NAFTA | made to increase international trade -Clinton convinced the senate to ratify the North American free trade agreement -this joined Canada, US, and Mexico in a free trade zone -rose exports of American goods to both Canada and Mexico |
Bosnia | a 3-way civil war between orthodox christian serbs, catholic croations, and busnian muslim |

Kyoto (protocol) | -38 nations + EU signed Kyoto protocol -promised to reduce emissions -pres clinton did not submit this protocol to senate, most senators opposed to it -George bush in 2001 withdrew US from the Kyoto protocol, it had flaws in its treaty |
