| Jhd means to | using or exerting one’s power, effort, and ability and is followed by the phrase in the way of God |
| internal Jihad | which is a personal struggle to live according to the teachings of Islam and the Qur’an |
| social jihad | This can be seen as an application of moral principles to society. Can be done by fighting injustices in society to create a moral and harmonious society. |
| military jihad | This is a holy War, and it is believed that military action can be used to defend Islam and one’s homeland against invasion and aggression. |
| Offensive Jihad | Can be used against belligerent non-Muslims and to expand the borders of the Islamic state. They should not force non-Muslims to convert based off Qur’an teachings, instead, non-Muslims would have to pay Jizya which is known as a special tax |
| Defensive Jihad | Is based off self-defense and the enemy is anyone that is considered wronged which can be Muslims or non-Muslims. Can be waged to protect the Muslim community. Muslims have obligation to protect the Muslim lands, but Jihad must be the last resort |
