Post Civil War Reconstruction and Amendments

| Abraham Lincoln | Planned to allow the southern states to rejoin the Union, but was assassinated. |
| Reconstruction | the period of time after the Civil War from 1865-1877 |
| Andrew Johnson | became President after Lincoln was assassinated |
| Black Codes | Southern laws that were passed that gave African Americans some rights, but not all the rights the North gave |
| Freedman's Bureau | set up by the federal government to help former slaves adjust to freedom; provided medical care, clothing, food, and fuel |
| 13th Amendment | amendment to the Constitution that outlawed slavery |
| 14th Amendment | amendment to the Constitution that gave former slaves citizenship; said anyone born in the US is a citizen |
| 15th Amendment | gave all male citizens the right to vote, regardless of race or color |
| carpetbaggers | Northerners who moved to the South to help freed slaves |
| Rutherford B. Hayes | President when Reconstruction ended; removed federal troops from the South |
| sharecropping | When a land owner would allow another farmer (a tenant) to use his land to plant crops. In return, the tenant had to give the land owner part of the crop. |
| Jim Crow laws | laws put in place in the South which made segregation legal (separate schools, water fountains, seats in restaurants and on buses, etc) |
