TermDefinition
Charter document that permitted colonists to settle on land owned by their ruler.
Cash Crop A crop grown for profit.
Indentured Servant A worker who agreed to work for someone for a certain amount of time in exchange for the cost of an ocean voyage to North America.
Northwest Passage Waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Pilgrim A person who travels to a new place for religious reasons.
Separtist Group of people from England who wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England.
Persecution Unjust treatment of someone because of their beliefs.
Mayflower Compact Plan of government written by the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower.
Debtor A person who owes money.
Proprietor Owner
Plantation A large farm with many workers (enslaved people) who live on the land they work.
Colony A settlement far from the country that rules it.
New World A name referring to North and South America.
