This is to practice for my first Social Studies Test

List all of the traits of civilization. Cities, government, religion, social structure, writing and art.
What does Mesopotamia mean? “The land between rivers”
How did the Sumerians use the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers? Provide at least two ways. Drinking water and agricultural irrigation.
Why farming was so successful in Mesopotamia. Provide 3 reasons. One reason farming was so successful was because of silt, another reason is because of cannels and the last reason is because farmers got pretty qualified at a certain point.
How were Sumerians able to have a surplus of grains? They built levees and gates to control the flooding, and Irrigation canals came in handy
Why was the ziggurat important? Provide 3 examples. Religious ceremonies Gave food offerings to gods Payed temple taxes
Describe the religious views of the Sumerians. Provide at least 3 examples. They are polytheistic which means they believe in many gods Each city-state worshiped a god/goddesses. Priests offer food to gods and also try their best to please them.
Explain the role the Gods had in Sumer. To took care of their human helpers in every aspect of their lives.
How did the development of Hammurabi’s Code impact Mesopotamia? Provide at least 3 examples He codes regulated trade, business, and social relationships in Babylon which brings “fairness” to everyone in Babylon.
Why were the Sumerians able to develop the different kinds of job skills needed to have a civilization? Sumerians are considered the creators of civilization as modern humans and they understand it.
How were people politically and regionally organized in Mesopotamia? By social class.
Explain the role/job of each of these groups of people: Scribes, Administrators, & Priests Scribes: They were trained to write cuneiform and record many of the languages , Administrators: To maintain law and order Priests: Some priests please the gods by feeding and clothing them and others provide religious service to the people.
What are 4 Mesopotamian inventions? How did they help them advance? Potters Wheel: to make better pottery Irrigation: to get water for their crops Bronze metal: which helped to make better tools, axes, swords, etc.
Explain Sumerian writing. What kind of symbols did they use? Their writing system was called Cuneiform, Cuneiform was made up of symbols called glyphs that were representations of images.
What building materials did they lack (not have) & what did they do to cope or solve this problem? They often lacked on wood but what they did to cope with this problem was to use mud.
What are 3 additional facts you have learned about Mesopotamia that are not on this study guide? King Hammurabi made the code of laws. The Euphatres and the Tigris river surround Anicent Mesopotamia Mesopotamia is 6000 thousand years old.
