| Term | Definition |

| Bail | sum of money used as a security deposit. |
| Civil Liberties | the freedoms we have to think and act without government interference or fear of unfair treatment. |
| Eminent Domain | the right of the government to take private property—usually land—for public use. |
| Racial Profiling | by law enforcement officers—-being singled out as suspects because of the way they look. |
| Poll Tax | hey required voters to pay a sum of money before casting a ballot. |
| Indictment | a formal change by a group of citizens. |
| Petition | a formal request. |
| Censorship | it cannot ban printed materials or films merely because they contain alarming or offensive ideas, and it also cannot censor information before it is published or broadcast. |
| Libel | lies that are printed. |
| Slander | lies are spoken. |
| Militia | small, local army made up of volunteer soldiers. |
| Segregation | the social separation of the races. |
| Affirmative Action | programs to try to make up for past discrimination. |
| Discrimination | unfair treatment based on prejudice against a certain group. |
| Due Process | following established legal procedures. |
| Suffrage | the right to vote. |
