27 Amendments

TermDefinition
1st Amendment Freedom of speech, press, and religion.
2nd Amendment Right to own a firearm.
3rd Amendment Soldiers may not move into private homes without the consent of the homeowners.
4th Amendment Protects Americans from unreasonable searches and seizures, this protects individual citizens from the government.
5th Amendment Protects the rights of the accused. No trial may be held unless a person is formally charged, or indicated by a grand jury.
6th Amendment Gives additional due process rights to those accused of a crime If an accused person requests a jury trial, te trial must be speedy and public.
7th Amendment Guarantees citizens the right to a tral in a civil (lawsuit) case, which are disagreements between two citizens.
8th Amendment Allows for citizens charged with crimes to be released on bail. Depending on the type of crime committed, the record of the accused person, and what they can afford the judge sets the bail.
9th Amendment Allows us to enjoy privacy in out homes, medical records, financial records, etc.
10th Amendment This reserves all powers not given to the federal government, for the states. This limits the powers of the federal government, and keeps the government from becoming too strong.
11th Amendment Limits the Jurisdiction of the federal court system.
12th Amendment Sets up the Electoral College as we know it today, previously, the state’s electors were able to vote for two people for president.
13th Amendment Allowed congress to implement legislation that carried out the abolition of slavery.Outlaws slavery in the United States, and forced labor is only legal as a punishment.
14th Amendment This gave all citizens equal protection under the law, and citizenship to anyone born in the United States.
15th Amendment The last of the Civil war amendments, this allowed all men the right to vote in elections, regardless of their race, age, ethnicity, religion, etc.
16th Amendment Allows the Federal Government to collect an income tax on personal salaries.
17th Amendment Allowed for individual citizens to vote for Senators. Established the process of filling congressional seats left vacant by death, resignation, or impeachment.
18th Amendment Also known as the Volstead act, made the production, sale, transportation and consumption of alcoholic beverages illegal.
19th Amendment Gave women the right to vote in every state across the union.
20th Amendment The Lame Duck Amendment, moved up the end of Federal terms. The new dates of congressional terms begin is January 3rd, and January 20th for President.
21st Amendment Would repeal the 18th amendment,and empowered to Congress to regulate the liquor industry.
22nd Amendment Limits the time a person can be president to two elected terms (8 years), or a maximum of 10 toal years, if you finished the last two years of another president’s term.
23rd Amendment Gave the citizens of DC a voice in president elections.Gives the District of Columbia the same number of Electoral votes it would have if it were a state.
24th Amendment Made poll taxes illegal.
25th Amendment Sets up the order of Presidential succession, it was never officially stated in the in the Constitution the the Vice President would take office if something happened to the President.
26th Amendment Officially set the voting age at 18. The Constitution never specified a voting age, and most states set it at 21. The guaranteed 18 years old the right to vote in all federal elections.
27th Amendment Takes away the right of Congress to give itself a pay raise. Raises may only take place after the next election.
