I (1-3) Speech (in appropriate setting, you can voice opinion), speak untruthfully=slandor, written untruth=lible. Petition (written document protesting something) Religion (believe and practice until infringes on anothers rights-needs to be established)
I (3+4) Assembly (not with intent to cause a riot, need to protest peacefully) Press (can write whatever you want-has limits, not in school because of safety and in times of war)
II right to bear arms (just in case gov't goes crazy, militia can get weopons and overthrow the gov't)
III Quartering Troops ( no housing of soldiers)
IV Searches & Seizures (cant search or take things without warrant unless theres immenant danger
V capital crime-entitled to grand jury (can get rid of jurers, bring own witness) remain silent (answer all or no questions) can't be tried twice for same crime cant take stuff without just compensation (eminant domain)
VI due process
VII if one person sues for more than $20, you can have jury trial
VIII 1) bail (get out of jail, assures youll be at court, only have to pay 10%, then its returned, if dont show up, get more charges, pay 90%) encarcerated- you're danger to society=no bail 2) no cruel or unusual punishment
IX have rights that aren't specifically mentioned (unenumerated)
X states rights
XI states can't sue states (have to sue through federal)-could even be country
XII vice president is determined beforehand (electoral college)
XIII abolishment of slavery
XIV former slaves are citizens
XV former slave citizens can vote (still have poll tax, literacy tests; if your relative did these things, then because of grandfather clause, white people wouldnt have to)
XVI income tax (fed. gov't tax your income)
XVII popular election of senators (people vote for senators)
XVIII prohibition (1919)
XIX womans suffrage (1920) league of women voters-meet to discuss politics in order to educate about things going on
XX lame duck amendment (not effective)-makes new president start january 20th to move, etc
XXI repeal of prohibition (1933) in order to tax/control it
XXII presidential terms (2) FDR elected '36, '40, '44, died April 12th, 1945 longest serve is 1 day before 10 years (majority=that persons term)
XXIII D.C. gets their own electoral votes
XXIV no more poll tax
XXV presidential succession: vice pres, speaker of house, pres pro tempor of senate, secretary of state
XXVI 18 yrs to vote (if you are going to be 18 by general election, you are allowed to vote in primary)
XXVII congress can only give themselves a raise, but it doesn't start till the next election. if they make it too high they wont be reelected=no raise=they only give themselves minimum raise.
