Reconstruction rebuilding the South after the Civil War
segregation separation of people based on racial, ethnic or other differences
poll tax citizens had to pay a tax in order to vote
Jim Crow Laws laws that forced the separation of blacks from whites
freedmen men and women who had been slaves
Black Codes Southern laws that limited the rights of African Americans
13th Amendment abolished slavery (got rid of)
14th Amendment gave citizenship to all freedmen born in the United States
15th Amendment right to vote for ALL males citizens
scalawags Southern whites who supported Reconstruction
carpetbaggers northerners who went to the South to work and make money
sharecropping Southern landowners rented a farm to freedmen and took their crops as payment
discrimination acting differently toward a group of people
