| Jim Crow Laws | laws that forced the separation of blacks from whites |
| freedmen | men and women who had been slaves |
| Black Codes | Southern laws that limited the rights of African Americans |
| 13th Amendment | abolished slavery (got rid of) |
| 14th Amendment | gave citizenship to all freedmen born in the United States |
| 15th Amendment | right to vote for ALL males citizens |
| scalawags | Southern whites who supported Reconstruction |
| carpetbaggers | northerners who went to the South to work and make money |
| sharecropping | Southern landowners rented a farm to freedmen and took their crops as payment |
| discrimination | acting differently toward a group of people |
