Types of Government

QuestionAnswer
Government the organizations, institutions, and individuals who exercise political authority over a group of people
citizen a legal member of a country
Autocracy A system of government in which the power to rule is in the hands of a single individual
anarchy absence of government, a state of lawlessness, political disorder
dictatorship A form of government in which the leader has absolute power and authority.
Totalitarian a government that controls ALL aspect of the people's lives by taking away ALL freedoms
Communism a government and economic system that revolves around the government owning all property and businesses. Each member of society works and the government provides everyone with food, clothing, and housing.
Monarchy A government ruled by a king or queen
Constitutional Monarchy A King or Queen is the official head of state but power is limited by a constitution.
Parliament the lawmaking body of British government
Theocracy government run by religious leaders
Oligarchy A government ruled by a few powerful people
Democracy government by the people
Direct Democracy A form of government in which citizens rule directly and not through representatives
Representative Democracy (Republic) A system of government in which citizens elect representatives, or leaders, to make decisions about the laws for all the people.
Tyranny A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)
Absolute Monarchy A government in which the king or queen has absolute power.
Aristocracy A form of government where the power is confined to the wealthy. The upper class has all the power.
federation a collection of individual states that partially govern themselves and are joined by a central government
Laws written rules by the government to guide and protect its citizens
Functions of Governemnt keep order, provide security, provide services, guide the community
Levels of Government federal, state, local
Federal Government makes laws for the nation makes rules for citizens overseas foreign policy, elections, military
State Government Makes laws for the state, oversees education, overseas public health, sets up local governments
local government run counties, cities, towns provide schools, police, fire departments provide road maintenance, snow removal, trash collection
