English Efforts the English often relied on the King whenever they wanted to colonize a part of the New World; asking for charter grants and the establishment of their areas to become an official Royal Colony.
Virginia Company chartered in London in 1606. After landing in Maine, they decide to go back because of harsh winter, which leads to Jamestown in 1608. Virginia’s location was bad; built in the middle of a swamp, surrounded by a 13 strong Indian confederacy.
Captain John Smith community warehouses in Virginia had everyone share the same food but because of the uneven participation, he started military rule (if you don’t work, you don’t eat) and moved to agriculture.
Starving Time winter; ⅞ of people living in Virginia died of hunger and exposure. Agriculture failed because John Smith started the process during the fall, which is the wrong time to be planting crops. The people remaining tried to leave, but a new boat arrives.
John Rolfe when he introduced tobacco (learned from the Indians), it created salvation for Virginia. It was a money maker, reaching 1,500,000 million pounds of tobacco sold by 1629. But, this required more labor.
Headright System established in Virginia in order to receive more labor for harvesting and processing tobacco. For 7 years of labor, you could get 50 acres of land (rare).
1618 House of Burgesses since so many people came to Virginia, the House of Burgesses was established. It gave planters active decision-making rules in government.
Virginia Royal Colony as a result of expansion, the colonists took the land belonging to the Native Americans
George Calvert a Catholic who was in England’s government with a high position; so in 1632, he asked Charles I to grant him 10 million acres of land for religious refuge (Catholics) The king agreed but the land had to be open to everybody, even Protestants. He agreed.
1634 Ark and Dove 200 Catholic and Protestant settlers arrive (more protestants though because they had more money).
1640s Religious Stifle a toleration act was passed, expecting Catholics and Protestants to have good relationships.
Similarity between Maryland and Virginia both had the headright system and were growing tobacco. Virginia views them as a competitor and believes that they are “nothing but a bunch of Catholics.” Tobacco prices go down because there was much more tobacco being sold.
Plymouth Colony the Puritan’s 1st voyage failed; 180 left, but only 50 arrived in Virginia. 2nd voyage; landed in Leiden, 1618. They weren’t persecuted in the Netherlands, unable to purifying the Dutch too. They leave and get lost in the voyage, landing in Massachusetts.
Mayflower Compact gave political rights to any man who was willing to stay and abide by the law.
William Penn a Quaker who wanted to establish a refuge for other Quakers since they were being persecuted in England. He was given a huge grant of land by the King because of his political loyalty, and the land had lots of resources. (modern-day Pennsylvania)
Quaker Values the Quaker’s society was based on social equality (no slavery, no difference between Natives and the English, no difference between men and women), religious toleration, genuine political participation, pacifism (war would not solve things), and fair trea
Non-Quakers as Pennsylvania became popular, more settlers came. They took part in land seizures, in which they didn’t buy land from the Natives, but rather they just took it. This made the Native Americans fight back, and they wanted to issue a bounty for their heads
James Oglethorpe when he went to England and was disgusted with the imprisonment (debt), decides to create a haven for imprisoned debtors; starting a colony for their redemption where they became small farmers instead. However, they were forbidden from buying and selling
Georgia Royal Colony 1752 Over time, the farmers wanted to earn the amount of money that people did in South Carolina, but Oglethorpe said no. Resentment against Oglethorpe grew and they kept challenging his authority; until he leaves. Then, the king takes over and establishes Geo
