The Thirteen Colonie

| Slavery | the condition of being owned by another person and being made to work without pay |
| Middle Colonies | This colonial region consisted of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Quakers settled here. |
| Quakers | A religious group that moved to Pennsylvania. They believed in equality for all. |
| New England Colonies | Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire |
| Fundamental Orders of Connecticut | 1620 - The first agreement for self-government in America. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower and set up a government for the Plymouth colony. |
| Pilgrims | A religious group that escaped religious persecution in England and established Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts in 1620 to seek religious freedom. |
| Puritans | A religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay. |
| Proprietary Colony | a colony owned and ruled by one person who was chosen by a king or queen |
| Religious freedom | The right to practise your religion and change your religion |
| religious persecution | the mistreatment of an individual or group because of their religious beliefs |
| staple crops | crops that are always needed |
| Cash crops in the south | cotton, rice, tobacco, indigo |
| Maryland | founded as a safe colony for catholics |
| self-government | a system of government in which people make their own laws |
| Massachusetts Bay Colony | Colony founded in 1630 by John Winthrop, part of the Great Puritan Migration, founded by Puritans. Located in the state of Massachusetts |
| Plymouth Colony | A colony established by the English Pilgrims, or Separatists, in 1620. Plymouth became part of Massachusetts |
| New England Economy | Shipbuilding, Lumber, Fishing |
| Middle Colonies Economy | trading towns, wheat, rye,corn |
| Southern Colonies Economy | Tobacco, rice, cotton, slavery |
| Virginia House of Burgesses | The first representative assembly in the new world. Created due to distance between Great Britain and the colonies. |
| Self Government | a government under the control of the people that live in the colony |
| representative government | a government in which representatives are elected to a position in office. |
