who was "dred scott"? a slave who sued for his freedom.
who was "Roger Taney"? chief justice of the supreme court.
describe the story of the case. scotts master had tooken him in to a free state (illinois and Minnesota) befor returning to missouri. scott sued for his freedom arguing that since that since he had lived in a free state he should be free.
what was the outcome of the case? he lost his case to become free.
what were the three reasons judge taney ruled this case away? 1. only citizens could sue. 2. he was now in missouri, a slave state. 3. congress could not ban slavery in territories.
What was the location of the lincoln- douglas debate? seven cities in illinois.
who were the people involved in the lincoln- douglas debate? 1. Abraham lincoln (republican) 2. stephen douglas (democrat)
what were Lincoln's political thoughts on slavery? lincoln campaigned against douglas who's party was willing to make deals with the south.
what was the outcome of the lincoln- douglas debate? stephen douglas wins the election but lincoln becomes nationally known.
why did john brown attack harper's ferry? brown hoped to use the arsenals as a command post for a slave rebellion.
define arsenal. where the military stores there weapons
define treason. going against you your country/ government. (violent)
who was Robert E. Lee and what role did he play at harper's ferry? he captured john brown at harper's ferry, he also was a carnal for the army.
what four people ran for president in 1860, what were each of there political parties. 1. stephen douglas- northern democrat 2. abraham lincoln- republican 3. john breckenridge- southern democrat 4. john bell- constitutional union party
why was abraham lincoln able to win the election of 1860? he was the only republican which split the democrats into 2.
other facts about the election of 1860. 1. bell and douglas wanted popular sovereignty 2. breckenridge wanted to expand slavory 3. 18 free wtates and 15 slave states 4. lincoln wanted to stop the expantion of slavory
define secede. formally withdraw from a union.
which was the first state to secede? south carolina
what were the other states that seceded? north carolina, virginia, Tennessee, georgia, florida, alabama, mississippi, Louisiana, arkansas
why did southern states feel they needed to secede? they feared that the government would abolish slavery.
what was different about the session of north carolina, virginia, Tennessee and arkansas? they withdrew after the first conflict between the north and the south.
what was differest about missouri, kentucky, maryland, and delaware when the southern states seceded? they were slave states but stayed with the north.
what year was the dred scott decesion? 1857

what was the year of john browns attack on harpers ferry? 1859
what were the years of when the south seceded? 1860- 1861
