| Preamble to the Constitution | Introduction to the U.S. Constitution, establishing the goals and purposes of government |
| Article 1 | Article of the Constitution that defines the Legislative Branch, it's powers, members, and workings. creating congress |
| Legislative Branch | the branch of government that makes the laws. two parts; senate and house of representatives |
| Article 2 of the Constitution | Section of the Constitution laying out powers and responsibilities of the Executive Branch. who qualifies to be president |
| Executive Branch | the branch of government that carries out laws |
| Article 3 of the Constitution | Section of the Constitution laying out powers and responsibilities of the Judicial Branch |
| Article 7 of the Constitution | Outlines the process for ratification of the Constitution |
| Ratify | to approve, give formal approval to, confirm |
| Abridging | limiting or reducing |
| infridge | to damage, encroach or trespass upon (the rights, etc. of others) |
| quartered | (verb) be stationed or housed/lodged in a specified place. |
| warrants | written orders authorizing a person to make an arrest, a seizure, or a search |
| probable cause | reasonable cause for issuing a search warrant or making an arrest; more than mere suspicion |
| compelled | force or oblige (someone) to do something. |
| deprived | lacking the necessities of life |
| Due Process | fair treatment through the normal judicial system, especially as a citizen's entitlement. |
| Article 4 of the Constitution | Outlines the rights and expectations for all states and citizens including the adding of new states |
| Article 5 of the Constitution | Outlines the process for amending or changing the Constitution |
| Article 6 of the Constitution | Supremacy Clause - clearly states that national law will be supreme over state law |
| compulsory | required by law or a rule; obligatory |
| counsel | the lawyer/lawyers conducting a case |
| bail | A sum of money used as a security deposit to ensure that an accused person returns for his or her trial |
| Enumeration | a list of words, phrases or clauses, sometimes numbered or bulleted |
| construed | interpreted, understood |
| disparage | to degrade, to speak of someone or something in a derogatory manner |
| 1st bill of rights | Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion and Petition |
| 2nd bill of rights | Right to keep and bare arms |
| 3rd bill of rights | Prohibits the Housing of Troops without owners consent. |
| 4th bill of rights | Protection against illegal search and seizure |
| 5th bill of rights | No deprivation of life liberty or property without "due process of law" |
| 6th bill of rights | criminal court procedures; right to fair and public trial, and right to an attourney/ counsel |
| 7th bill of rights | Right to a trial by jury in civil cases |
| 8th bill of rights | excessive bail cant be required, no cruel and unusual punishment |
| 9th bill of rights | Unenumerated Rights Amendment. Citizens have unenumerated rights in addition to those stated in the Constitution. Not been developed by Supreme Court. Not everything can be written down. |
| 10th bill of rights | Powers not granted to the national government belong to the states and to the people |
