Elizabeth | She was pronounced Queen of England in 1558; but, during her rule, there was religious conflict, troubled economics, and tenuous claim to the throne. |
Covert Attacks on Spain | England couldn't fight Spain openly; as a result, Elizabeth supports the Netherlands by sending them resources. They also used privateers to set the Spanish up-flame; pirates were useful because they could easily lie about their intentions. |
Newfoundland July 30th, 1583 | To get rid of the useless people, Elizabeth sends them to the new world underneath the leadership of Sir Humphrey Gilbert, to start colonies and find new resources (more wealth). This fails though because it was too cold in the winter; waste of money. |
Roanoke | Underneath Sir Walter Raleigh, they start being more risky, moving closer into Spanish territory. They set up this colony but it gets abandoned later. Though, from that area, the English could have harassed Spanish shipping. |
The French Presence in America | Their government was hands off, but their population stayed small due to trust issues. Some of the French traveled to the new world, and ended up earning a lot of money from fur. |
1663 France Interested | France saw how much money the French were making in New France, so they started persuading others to move there. "It is your duty to go to new France." |
Royal Colony 1674 | France eventually establishes this colony in America. But, they will need defense against the natives. |
Joliet and Marquette | These two people explored the upper branches of the Mississippi river. They came back with tales (good stories) of the Native Americans. "They are perfect to trade with! They have huge cantaloupes and tons of food!"; start of French Expansion. |
Robert Cavilier Sieur de la Salle | He studied to be a priest in France, but got kicked out; follows his brother into New World and starts trading with the Natives. He learns 12 of their languages in the first year. La Salle becomes extremely wealthy and wants to use waterways. |
Mississippi River | La Salle comes across the Mississippi river and believes it would be useful for trade; but when he asks the King of France to set up a fort at the mouth of the river, he rejects the idea because he wants to avoid war with Spain. |
The Dutch Enterprise | 1630s; they dominated in slave trade and owned a number of Caribbean Islands. Henry Hudson and the New Netherlands are important components of this event. |
Henry Hudson | Hudson explored to find the Northwest Passage; going past Hudson River, Hudson Strait, and Hudson Bay. By the time he finds Hudson Bay, his crew members are tired of exploring and put him into a life boat to return back to the Netherlands. |
New Netherlands | There is a diverse population and patroon ships were offered to any company shareholders if they brought 50 colonists at their own expense, yet it costed a lot of money and people refused. |
French Louisiana | France get to claim Louisiana because it was unlooked for; the Spanish looked for them in Texas/Florida. It's a strategic location because it has fertile soil and a large population; other countries also had to go through it to reach certain parts. |
Choctaw Alliance | An alliance with 12 million members; this alliance was established in French Louisiana. |
Dutch West India Company | There was a change in policy; patroon ships became an alternative, so they offered to grant attractive land to any free man who was willing to go over to the New Netherlands. |
Head Ride System | You would sell a contract of 7 years labor to the captain of the vessel; after the vessel brings you there, they sell that contract to a passenger, and the passenger buys the 7 year service and if you work off all 7 years, you get free land after. |
Santa Fe | Became the first Spanish settlement in the Southwest in 1609; it was found by Onate's people. |
1680 Pueblo Revolt | The Pueblo Indians overthrew Spanish power; the Spanish eventually took it back in 1693. |
1598 Onate Expedition | Onate was excessive in his cruelty to the Native Americans; he executed and enslaved Indians who resisted the Spanish incursion. This removed him from his position. |
Indian Assistance is Crucial | The Indians are important because they were the ones that helped Spain conquer over the Aztecs, helping them get to the New World. But after Spain started making money, they broke their friendships and promises with the Indians. |
Santa Fe and New Netherlands Similarity | Both Santa Fe and New Netherlands were places where people overthrew Spain and gained independence. |
