Abolition the act of getting rid of something such as slaves
Anaconda Plan military strategy proposed by Union General Winfield Scott early in the American Civil War. This called for a naval blockade of the Confederate littoral, a thrust down the Mississippi, and the strangulation of the South by Union land and naval forces.
Battle of Gettysburg a battle of the American Civil War (1863); the defeat of Robert E. Lee's invading Confederate Army was a major victory for the Union.
Battle of Vicksburg a decisive Union victory during the American Civil War that divided the Confederacy and cemented the reputation of Union General Ulysses S. Grant.
Carpetbaggers a person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction.
Dred Scott v. Sanford the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on March 6, 1857, that having lived in a free state and territory did not entitle an enslaved person, to his freedom. The decision argued that, as someone's property, was not a citizen and could not sue in a federal court.
Emancipation Proclamation an edict issued by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln that freed the slaves of the Confederate states in rebellion against the Union.
Fort Sumter a sea fort built on an artificial island protecting Charleston, South Carolina from naval invasion.
14th Amendment granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including former enslaved people—and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.”
Fugitive Slave Act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state.
Homestead Act a revolutionary concept for distributing public land in American history.
Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty.
Reconstruction an effort to reunify the divided nation and integrate African Americans into society.
Scalawags describe a farm animal of little value; it later came to refer to a worthless person.
Seneca Falls Convention the first women's rights convention in the United States.
Sumner-Brooks Affair when Representative Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina, used a walking cane to attack Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist Republican from Massachusetts.
Temperance Movement a movement to limit drinking in the United States.
Ten Percent Plan specified that a southern state could be readmitted into the Union once 10 percent of its voters (from the voter rolls for the election of 1860) swore an oath of allegiance to the Union.
Tenant Farming a system of agriculture whereby farmers cultivate crops or raise livestock on rented lands.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin of Uncle Tom, an enslaved person, depicted as saintly and dignified, noble and steadfast in his beliefs.
