| loyalist | an American who favored the British side during the American Revolution |
| tory | another term for loyalist |
| boycotta | a protest in which people refuse to buy certain items until specific conditions are met |
| grievances | official statement of a complaint over something believed to be wrong or unfair |
| preamble | The beginning of a document that explains why the document exists |
| smuggling | The act of illegally importing or exporting goods |
| taxation without representation | belief that colonists should not have to pay taxes because they had no voice in Parliament |
