| elizabethan settlement | elizabeth wanted a protestant church, hoped to win people over by keeping some of the old things |
| puritans | anglicans who thought that the old ceremonies and practices were too much like the catholic church |
| low church anglicans | agreed with the puritans but saw no problem with the old practices |
| high church anglicans | thought that the church's traditional practices, especially the bishops, were a divinely ordained |
| separatists | believed that the whole church of England was corrupt and that true christians must separate from it |
| idea of the covenant | puritans believed that god deals with mankind through a series of covenants or agreements |
| episcopal polity | an authority such as a monarch appoints bishops, and the bishops in turn appoint lower officials down to the individual churches |
| congregational polity | each congregation elects its own officers and remains independent |
