Civic Literacy Module 7 Review

TermDefinition
Federalism A system of government that separates state and federal government powers.
Municipality Large, populated areas within a county that form cities, townships, and villages.
County An area divided by the state to organize local government.
City The largest subdivision of a county.
City Commissioners Elected officials from the county who pass county ordinances and are in charge of the county’s budget.
Sheriff Elected position to serve as the county’s law enforcement.
Charter A government type a municipality chooses to govern themselves.
Incorporation The process of a section of the county to create their own municipality and draft a charter.
Mayor-Council Form of city government where the city council has legislative powers and the mayor has executive powers.
Council-Manager Form of city government; the city council is elected by the people, and they hire a city manager to carry out the day-to-day operations of the city.
Special Districts Set up for the implementation of a specific service, like school districts.
Government Services Services provided by the government like police, fire department, trash collection, etc.
Textile A type of cloth or woven fabric.
Export To sell and ship items to another country.
Economy The resources and wealth of a certain area or country.
White Supremacist A person who believes that the White race is superior to other races.
Massacre The brutal killing of multiple people.
Coup d'état Overthrowing a government.
Jim Crow Laws A system of laws meant to oppress Black people and keep Black and White people separate.
Plessy v Ferguson The Supreme Court case that ruled it was constitutional to mandate the separation of races.
