Term | Definition |

Civic Duty | Required acts that citizens must follow and are enforced by laws. |
Civic Responsibility | Acts a citizen is expected to do, but is not required to by law. |
Jury Duty | Obligation to serve on a jury during the trial process. |
Citizenship | Members of a government system who are entitled to government services. |
Naturalization | The process by which a non-citizen applies for citizenship. |
Non-Citizens | Those in the United States for a specific period granted by the government; formerly referred to as aliens. |
Immigrants | A person who has been approved by the government to permanently move to the United States. |
Democracy | A form of government in which the people hold the ultimate authority. |
Dictatorship | A single ruler completely controls the government and all decision-making. |
Political Party | Association of individuals with similar political views/interests. |
Platform | Formal policy outlining the beliefs of a political party. |
Democratic Party | Liberal party in the United States supporting a strong central government. |
Republican Party | Conservative party in the United States supporting more state government rights. |
Political Climate | The current state of politics. |
Ballot | A place on which people can cast votes. |
Candidate | An individual who enters an election to win a political office. |
Caucus | A meeting of members of a political party in which they select the candidate they want to run for the Presidency or another political office. |
Delegates | People who serve on behalf of their party; at the national convention, they help choose the Presidential candidate. |
Election | The process by which voters cast ballots for candidates and/or policies. |
Electoral College | Electoral delegates, chosen by the voters of each state, who vote for the President and Vice President; all but two states cast all of their electoral votes for the candidate who received the majority of the popular vote in that state. |
General Election | The process by which candidates are chosen for political offices. |
Hanging Chad | A piece of paper from a ballot which did not detach fully and thus means the votes on that ballot do not count. |
Primary Elections | Voters select the candidate they want to run in the general election. |
Voter Registration | Procedure by which individuals sign up to vote. |
Angel Island | Immigration station for processing immigrants arriving on the west coast of the United States. |
Ellis Island | Immigration station for processing immigrants arriving on the east coast of the United States. |
Immigration and Neutrality Act | Determines the number of immigrants admitted yearly and manner in which they are processed (it has been changed over the years). |
National Identity | A sense of belonging that is connected to the culture, beliefs, and traditions of a country. |
Quota System | Sets the number of immigrants who could migrate to the United States from any given country as a percentage of that nationality’s population in the United States by a certain date; favored some nationalities over others. |
Resident | An individual who lives in a country legally. |
