Civic Literacy Module 4 Review

TermDefinition
Executive Order A rule or order issued by the President that has the force of law.
Recession When the economy is in a downfall for six or more consecutive months.
Governor The head of the state executive branch.
President The head of the United States executive branch.
Economy The use of resources within a country, especially the flow of money and rate of employment.
Cabinet The heads of the 15 United States executive departments that are appointed to advise the President.
Council of State The heads of the 9 North Carolina departments that are appointed to advise the Governor.
State of Emergency In a crisis, a declaration by the local, state or national government that normal operations of social and political life are on hold; civil rights may be suspended; citizens may have to take specific actions.
Commander in Chief The President, as a civilian, serves as the superintendent of the military.
National Guard Branch of the military with responsibilities to both presidents and governors; help with civil unrest and natural disasters in the U.S. and assists military operations abroad.
Central Intelligence Agency Gathers information regarding potential threats to the U.S. and carries out secret operations on behalf of the President.
Federal Emergency Management Agency Assists people through disasters beforehand, during and afterwards.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Enforces national laws and protects the U.S. from terrorism.
State Bureau of Investigation Helps local law enforcement with investigations.
State Highway Patrol Works to keep NC highways safe.
Paris Agreement International commitment to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
Environmental Protection Agency National agency responsible for protecting the environment and people’s health.
White House Council on Environmental Quality Part of the Executive Office of the President; coordinates environmental efforts on behalf of the President.
Department of the Interior Part of the President's cabinet; protects natural resources; honors US commitments to indigenous people and researches natural resources.
National Park Service Cares for national parks and historic sites.
Kyoto Protocol 1997 international agreement encouraging developed and developing countries to cut back on their greenhouse gas emissions.
Montreal Protocol 1987 international agreement to stop the production of goods which deplete the ozone layer.
