State of Emergency | In a crisis, a declaration by the local, state or national government that normal operations of social and political life are on hold; civil rights may be suspended; citizens may have to take specific actions. |
Commander in Chief | The President, as a civilian, serves as the superintendent of the military. |
National Guard | Branch of the military with responsibilities to both presidents and governors; help with civil unrest and natural disasters in the U.S. and assists military operations abroad. |
Central Intelligence Agency | Gathers information regarding potential threats to the U.S. and carries out secret operations on behalf of the President. |
Federal Emergency Management Agency | Assists people through disasters beforehand, during and afterwards. |
Federal Bureau of Investigation | Enforces national laws and protects the U.S. from terrorism. |
State Bureau of Investigation | Helps local law enforcement with investigations. |
State Highway Patrol | Works to keep NC highways safe. |
