What does imperialism mean? The extension of a nations power over other lands
What does rough rider mean? one who is accustomed to riding unbroken or little trained horses
What does Racism mean? the belief that race determines a person's traits and capabilities
What does Protectorate mean? a political unit that depends on another government for its protection
What does indirect rule mean? capital government in which local rulers are allowed to maintain their positions of authority and status
What does direct rule mean? Colonial government in which local elites are removed from power and replaced by a new set of officials brought from the mother country
What does annexed mean? incorporated territory into an existing political unit, such as a city or country
What does indigenous mean? native to a particular region
What does Sepoy mean? an Indian soldier hired by the British East India Company to protect the company's interests in the region
What does Viceroy mean? a governor who ruled as a representative of a monarch
What does caudillos mean? in post-revolutionary Latin America, a strong leader ruled chiefly by military force, usually with the support of the landed elite
What are cash crops? a crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower.
What are peninsulares? a person born on the Iberian Peninsula
What are creoles? a person of European descent born in Latin America and living there permanently
What is a mestizo? a person of mixed European and Native American Indian descent
