Exploration Vocabulary and First Inhabitants

Hernando De Soto •A Spanish explorer who searched for gold in Georgia, and in the process his expedition lead to the deaths of many native Americans.
Spanish Missions •The Spanish built missions to convert native Americans to Catholicism.
Palisades •A strong wooden wall built for defense around a settlement
Artifacts •An object from the past that contributes to our understanding of an earlier culture
Conquistador •A Spanish Explorer and conqueror who sought to destroy and take over existing culture In the Americas in the 1500s
Horticulture •The Science of cultivating plants and trees
Mercantilism An economic theory in which government controls trade and attempts to transfer wealth from colonies to parent culture
Beringia •An ancient land bridge that connected north America to Asia that People and animals used for migration
Wattle and Daub walls built of a network of interwoven sticks and covered with mud or clay; used by early American Indian cultures and European settlers.
Mississippian Indians (800 C.E.-1600 C.E.) • - the last major prehistoric Native American culture in Georgia; known for being large scale farmers and mound builders who traded throughout North America.
