| fertile | (of soil or land) producing or capable of producing abundant vegetation or crops. |
| silt | a solid, dust-like sediment that water, ice, and wind transport and deposit. |
| fertilizer | a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility. |
| surplus | an amount of something left over when requirements have been met; an excess of production or supply over demand. |
| irrigation | To irrigate is to water crops by bringing in water from pipes, canals, sprinklers, or other man-made means, rather than relying on rainfall alone. |
| city-state | a political system consisting of an independent city having sovereignty over contiguous territory and serving as a centre and leader of political, economic, and cultural life. |
| empire | an extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority, formerly especially an emperor or empress. |
| cuneiform | denoting or relating to the wedge-shaped characters used in the ancient writing systems of Mesopotamia, Persia, and Ugarit, surviving mainly impressed on clay tablets. |
| polytheistic | relating to or characterized by belief in or worship of more than one god. |
| ziggurat | a rectangular stepped tower, sometimes surmounted by a temple. |
