SS Vocabulary: Characteristics of Civilization

TermDefinition
Government Civilizations have a form of government that has control over the people and creates laws and rules. This government also protects the civilization and defines social classes
Social Classes People become ranked in classes based on their job and social status in a society.
Religion Religions are the belief system of a civilization. Civilizations may have many gods, or the king or a ruler may be believed to be a god.
Economy and Trade Civilizations have resources that they trade. This trade develops an economy that allows wealth to be created.
Technology Civilizations developed new technologies such as farming techniques, weapons, or any new inventions.
Arts Civilizations created creative and cultural expressions through music, dance, sculptures, architecture and art.
Job Specialization Workers begin to focus on and specialize in one type of job.
System of Tribute Civilizations pay taxes for services provided by the government.
Surplus Food Civilizations grow and farm crops and livestock. They have been able to grow more than they need. This allows the civilization to trade and increase wealth.
Cities, Architecture, and Infrastructure Civilizations build architecture, such as buildings, tombs, and temples; and infrastructure, such as roads, waterways, and irrigation systems.
Written Language and Learning Civilizations accumulate knowledge and incorporate and education system. This came in the form of written language, math, science, and technology / innovation.
Primary Source Source created at the time of the event by someone who was there
Secondary Source Source created at a much later date by someone who had studied the event
