Land Ordinance of 1785 Provided for the rectangular land survey of the Old Northwest. Survey was completed after Revolution War. Provided way to systematically distribute land to public.
Homestead Act, 1862 Provided 160 acres of land to settlers for a fee of $18 and guarantee of 5 years residence. Results in 10% land settlement in US.
Morrill Act, 1862 Colleges created from sale of land
General Land Law Revision Act, 1891 Allowed President of US to create forest preserves
Forest Management Act, 1897 Allowed Secretary of Interior to manage forest preserves
Gifford Pinchot, 1898 1st Chief Forester of the US and publicizes the need for forest conservation.
US Reclamation Act, 1902 Allowed construction of water storage and irrigation systems through the sale of land
Public Lands Commission, 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt created to propose rules for land development and management
Antiquities Act, 1906 1st law to provide federal protection for archaeological sites and to designate national monuments
Resettlement Administration, 1935 Formed to carry out experiments in population resettlement and land reform. Result is greenbelt towns.
Servicemen's Readjustment Act (GI Bill), 1944 Guaranteed home loans to veterans. Result is rapid development of suburbs.
Total acreage of national forest land in the United States 192 million, based on data from the US Forest Service as of 2011.
