Magna Carta-how did it influence American leaders when they were considering the structure of their government? by showing it was important to limit powers of the government
Virgina State for Religious Freedom-how did Thomas Jefferson's ideas in this statue differ from previous ideas held by the government? government cannot control religious choices
How did the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 affect education and slavery in the Northwest Territory? it required that public education be provided (free for citizens)
What was the purpose of the Land Ordinance of 1785? to set up a system for surveying and dividing western land
How did the Declaration of Independence influence the Articles of Confederation? when the Declaration was written, they made sure that it made the central government weaker
Why were the Articles uneffective in solving internal problems that existed in the states? there were errors in the Articles, so they had to revise them for the Convention; there was no on that was able to send people to the army
What change to the structure of the government did the Virgina Plan suggest? -legislature would be bicameral -supreme power to central government -have three branches of government
Great Compromise- how did it resolve the debate over state representation in the federal government? -bicameral -each state has two representatives in Senate -amount of representatives in the House would depend on population
3/5ths Compromise-what was it? what debate did it solve? -3/5 of the slave population would be counted in the state population -whether slaves should or should not be counted in the population
Why did the framers of the Constitution include checks and balances? to make sure all the branches had equal powers
Bill of Rights- what are they? first ten of the proposed amendments intended to protect citizens' rights
What is Congress's function in the federal government? -writes laws -grants money -declares war -approves treaties -confirms presidential appointees
Judicial Branch- what is its role? On what grounds can a federal court strike down a state of federal law? strikes down laws when they find them unconstitutional
Election of 1796- why was it different from the 1st election? What was the 1st political party division in the U.S.? there were more than one candidate running for president
What is the Electoral College? group of people selected from each of the states to cast a vote in presidential elections
National Bank- why did Alexander Hamilton take measures to limit the bank's power? so they would not have complete control over all the government's money
George Washington- according to his farewell address, what was the key national success political unity
what was the 1st political party division in the U.S.? Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans
