Unit 2 Amendments

Amendment 1 most basic rights of citizens; freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly,right to petition
Amendment 2 the right for citizens to keep and bear arms
Amendment 3 no soldier shall be housed in any house during time of peace without the owner's consent
Amendment 4 rules against "unreasonable searches and seizures"; requires a warrant with a probable cause
Amendment 5 double jeopardy- cannot be tried for the same crime twice; does not have to testify against himself; must be given due process of law
Amendment 6 protects the rights of someone who has been indicted; guarantees speedy public trial; right to know charges against them and hear witnesses testifying against them
Amendment 7 juries can decide civil cases; mainly where no one was harmed
Amendment 8 allows for bail; a defendant can avoid staying out of jail before and during a trial; courts cannot set unfair bail; if a crime is very serious, a judge does not have to post bail
Amendment 9 the rights listed in the Constitution are not the only rights citizens have; allows courts and Congress to decide other basic rights of citizens
Amendment 10 recognizes that the states and the people have additional powers; delegated powers -- powers the constitution does not specifically give *Address rights of the people not specifically listed in the Constitution*
