Test Study Guide: Reconstruction

What is Sharecropping? A system where the A plantation owner allows a tenant to use the land in exchange for a share of the crop.
What is the 13th amendment? Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
What is the 14th amendment? All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
What is the 15th amendment? The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied
What is the Literacy tests? Tests that made sure that Black Americans couldn't vote.
What are the Jim Crow Laws? Laws that were the new segregation acts.
What was the Poll tax? A tax that freedman had to pay in order to vote.
What was the Enforcement Acts? prohibited groups of people from banding together with the intention of violating citizens' constitutional rights
What is the Tenant farming? Someone who rents the land owned by a landlord
What was the Presidential Reconstruction? All of the land that had been given to the freeman was given back to its former owners.
What are Black codes? Restrictive laws designed to limit freedom of freeman and ensure they could be used as a cheap labor force.
What was Reconstruction? Reconstruction was an effort to bring together the divided nation and place African Americans into society.
What were the political parties? Republican and Democrat
What's Carpetbagger? A person from the northern states who went to the South to profit from Reconstruction.
