The Early National Period

Anti-Federalist | person who was against the ratification of the United States Constitution; didn’t want it to become law |
cabinet | group of officials who advise the president of the United States, appointed by the president |
Democratic-Republicans | political party in the early years of America that thought Americans should support revolutions |
faction | group of people whose ideas are different from the larger group |
Federalists | conservative political party who wanted a strong government with strict limits, passed a law making it a crime to tell lies about government officials |
sovereignty | authority of a state to govern itself |
Executive branch | branch of government that carries out the laws, led by the president |
Legislative branch | branch of government the makes the laws, led by House of Representatives and the Senate |
Judicial branch | branch of government that decides if laws have been broken, led by the Supreme Court |
Daniel Shays | led revolt because of the decreasing value of people’s money and the raising of taxes |
Thomas Jefferson | thought the Constitution did not allow the national government to create a national bank |
Roger Sherman | presented a compromise that allowed people and states to have a voice in the national government |
George Washington | wanted a strong, but limited, national government, agreed with Hamilton about a national bank, set precedent for presidents to serve only two terms |
James Madison | wanted a national government strong enough to lead and help states work together but not take over the responsibilities of the states |
James Wilson | wanted the people to have a strong say in government because they had the common sense needed to may decisions |
Alexander Hamilton | believed that a national bank would be a good way to manage the nation’s money |
Bill of Rights | a list of ten constitutional amendments that were passed to protect the rights of the states and the people |
Constitutional Convention | gathering of delegates that wanted to form a strong, but limited, government |
Electoral College | a check to make sure a good and wise man was chosen as president through the election of US representatives and senators from each state |
