What is a constitution? A plan of the government and how the country should work.
What was the US first constitution called? Articles of Confederation.
Why didn’t the Articles of Confederation work? states had a lot of power (authority) while the national (federal) government did not have a lot of power.
What is the preamble? It is the first part of the constitution that explains the purpose of our government.
What was the purpose of the Constitutional Convention? Discuss changes that needed to be made to the Articles of Confederation.
What is the Executive Branch? Know that it is the President and his/her cabinet. The cabinet are the people that advise the president.
What is the Legislative Branch? Consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. They call this congress. They make the laws.
What is the Judicial Branch? Made up of nine justices that can serve for life. They make sure the laws are linked and related to the Constitution. Each part (branch) has equal power. This is known as checks and balances.
What is the Federal vs. States Rights? State government can: set up local government and public schools.National government can: print money, form a military. Can states and the federal government share some authority (power)?- Yes, this includes collecting taxes and setting up court systems
What is the bill of rights? Bill of Rights- James Madison proposed that the Constitution needed to address individual rights. Americans have certain civil rights that cannot be taken away. The Bill of Rights are the first ten amendments to the Constitution.
What is an amendment? It is a change or addition to a document.
How many amendments are there total? 27
What is the first amendment. The first amendment is the freedom of speech, religion, press (to print/report news) the right to petition and assemble.
