Anthony Burns A fugitive slave from Virginia that was arrested in Boston
Compromise of 1850 California could enter as a state while the Fugitive Slave Act was enacted.
Daniel Webster Favored Clay's plan saying "I wish to speak today, not as a Massachusetts man, nor as a Northern man, but as an American . . . I speak today for the preservation of the Union. Hear me for my cause."
Fugitive Slave Act Made it illegal to help fugitive slaves escape. Also made it so they could try "Fugitive Slaves' without a jury.
Harriet Beecher Stowe Wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin."
John C. Calhoun Argued that allowing California to enter as a free state would destroy the balance.
Missouri Compromise Made it so that all states above a certain latitude would be free states and all those below would be slave states.
Sectionalism Favoring one area or region over the nation.
Uncle Tom's Cabin A Anti-slavery piece of literature that showed the terrible truth about slavery.
Wilmot Proviso "Where I see a man, I see god given rights."
Charles Sumner Criticized Pro-Slavery and personally insulted Andrew Pickens Butler. Was later beat up by Preston Brooks, a relative of Andrew Pickens Butler.
Democrats A party that was against the spread of slavery. Later joined forces with the free-soil party and abolitionists to create the Republican party.
Franklin Pierce A little known politician from New Hampshire that promised to honor the compromise.
John Brown Killed 5 men and started what is now called the Pottawatomie Massacre.
Kansas A state that was part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act
Kansas-Nebraska Act Divided the leftovers of the Louisiana Purchase into two states, Kansas and Nebraska, And allowed them to choose their slave standing with popular sovereignty
Preston Brooks A relative of Andrew Pickens Butler, He beat up Charles Sumner due to Sumner personally insulting Andrew, Nearly killing him.
Stephen Douglas Introduced the idea of the Kansas-Nebraska act.
The Sack of Lawrence Occured when a group of anti-slavery leaders were charged with treason. When over 800 men came to arrest them, They found that the men had already fled. With this they were outraged, And pillaged nearby buildings and even killed one man.
