The reformation

QuestionAnswer
What are the snaps? Simony, Nepotism, Absenteeism , Pluralism and Sales of indulgences.
What does simony mean? The buying or selling of positions within the church.
What is nepotism? The appointing of relatives to church jobs regardless of merit.
What is absenteeism? A priest or bishop being absent from their parish or diocese for long periods of time.
What is pluralism? Holding more than one Church job at the same time.
What are Sale of indulgences? An indulgence was a special prayer the church sold that were said to reduce the time a soul spent in purgatory.
What is purgatory? A place between heaven and hell.
Who is an example of a reformer? Martin Luther
What did Martin Luther do? Martin Luther challenged the church.
How did Martin Luther challenge the church? He questioned whether the Catholic Church was teaching how do get into heaven correctly.
Why did Martin Luther think this? He thought this the church taught that a mixture of faith and good work was needed to get into heaven. But Luther found no mention about this is the Bible. He believed in justification by faith alone (only faith in god could get you into heaven.)
Where did the Reformation begin? It began in Germany.
What were the 95 theses? These were 95 arguments produced by Luther arguing about what he thought was wrong in Catholic Church
What was Papal Bull? A formal letter and command.
What was the diet of worms? A meeting in the town of worms which Luther was called to where he was invited to discuss his beliefs.
Did Luther change his mind? Luther did not change his mind.
What was the edict of worms. A law passes which made Luther an outlaw.
What is vernacular? Language of the people.
What is recant? To take back what you say.
What is heresy? Knowingly holding a view that goes against the official teaching of the church.
What is excommunication? To be kicked out of the Catholic Church and being unable to receive the sacraments.
What was a tithe? Everyone had to pay one. A tenth of their income to the local bishop.
What is the treaty of Augsburg? Each ruler would choose the religion for their state.
What was the Catechism? Rule book for Catholicism.
What was the council of Trent? The council of Trent were a series of meetings that forced the Catholic Church to change and get rid of the abuses.
