SS Ancient Greece

Aristotle He tutored Alexander and he is known a lot for the sciences
Alexander the Great The son of King Phillip and he conquered many Greek city-states and trained a strong and powerful army. His armies spread Greek language, ideas, art, and architecture. He started his own city, Alexandria.
Socrates He was known for the Socratic method which is to always ask questions and pushing people to do their best. He was the teacher of Plato. He died by drinking poison because of what he believed in.
King Phillip II He was the king of Macedonia who conquered Greece. He was the father of Alexander the Great. He also conquered many city-states
Plato He was a student of Socrates and he believed that you should trust in your government and that your government should be just and reasonable. He believed in Philosopher kings to rule, not democracy
Pericles He led Athens to the greatest glories the city would ever know. He created the Delian League and he did this because the Greek city-states wanted to join together to make sure they kept control over Persia. He started Athen's Golden Age.
Monarchy When one person, could be a queen, king, or emperor, has power over all the land and they are inherited with this power.
Oligarchy A form of government that has a few (3) wealthy people ruling over everyone. Oligarchs were also wealthy merchants (small group). They have made much of their money by land-owning.
Tyranny A form of government where one person takes power by force. A tyrant’s son does not inherit his father’s power and a tyrant cannot claim that he has a legal right to rule.
Democracy Citizens decide who rule (Not everyone can vote)
Citizen A member of the government that is entitled to protection. Citizen has rights as well as responsibilities in the place they live
Delian League Created by Pericles and eventually, the League drove Persia out so that they were free from them
Agora A gathering place for politics; marketplace in Ancient Greece
Colonies People who established a home in a new territory but we’re still being governed by the old government
Assembly The group of people who are in the government and they get together and talk with each other about important things
Philosophy The study of basic ideas about society, education, and right and wrong; basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes. (What’s the right way to live your life)
Philosopher A person who searches for wisdom or enlightenment
Hellenism the time following the death of Alexander the Great during which Greek culture spread through the known world. The kingdoms that were created in Alexander’s empire were Macedonia, Pergamum, Egypt, and the Seleucid Empire.
Sparta A powerful army that started the Peloponnesian War. They were tough, brutal, and powerful
Athens Big on trade and all about education.
Jury A group of people sworn to make a decision in a legal case (Think of Pericles because he came up with the idea of regular people sitting in a court case involving money)
Peloponnesian War the war that Athens was fighting. The Spartans wanted to Attack the Greeks while they were weak from this war
Direct Democracy A form of democracy in which all citizens can participate firsthand in the decision making process
Athen's Golden Age Changes in Democracy, advancing the Arts and Sciences, architects building beautiful buildings, supporting philosophers, and creating the Delian League.
Changing the Democracy Everyone had a say in all decisions. He appointed people to positions based on talent, not social class. Pericles wanted public workers to get paid a salary
Advanced in the Arts and Sciences Architecture, drama/theater, history, poetry, science/mathematics, medicine, and philosophy
Architects created beautiful buildings Built temples, gymnasiums, and theaters. Temples could be used for religious reasons, gyms to stay healthy, and the theaters for entertainment
Supported Philosophers The people were educated and full of knowledge.
Created the Delian League The league eventually drove Persia out so that they were free from them
How geography affected the development of the independent Greek city-states Most of Ancient Greece was mountains so they acted like natural barriers and kept them isolated from other city-states.
Direct Democracy People who vote directly (They do it themselves) on the issue
Representative Democracy When someone else votes on the issue (Not you) EXAMPLE: When Senators and other people go to Washington D.C. to vote on the issue. We don’t go to vote, Senators do and other people that are involved with the government.
