Alliance for Progress A U.S. foreign-aid program of the 1960's, providing economic and technical assistance to Latin American countries.
Berlin Wall A concrete wall that separated East Berlin and West Berlin from 1960 to 1989.
Economic Opportunity Act-EOA A law enacted in 1964, that provided funds for youth programs, antipoverty measures, small-business loans, and job training.
Flexible response A policy that involved preparing for a variety of military responses to international crises rather than focusing on the use of nuclear weapons.
Great Society President Lyndon B. Johnson's program to reduce poverty and racial injustice and to promote a better quality of life in the United States.
Hot line A communication link established in 1963 to allow the leaders of the U.S. and Soviet Union to contact each other in times of crisis.
Limited Test Ban Treaty-LTBT The 1963 treaty in which the United States and the Soviet Union agreed not ot conduct nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere.
Mandate The authority to act that an elected official receives from the voters who elected him or her.
Medicaid A program that provides health insurance to people on welfare.
Medicare A federal program that provides hospital insurance ad low-cost medical insurance to Americans aged 65 and older.
New Frontier President John F. Kennedy's legislative program- included proposals to provide medical care for elderly, rebuild blighted urban areas, aid education, to bolster the national defense, increase international aid, and expand the space program
Peace Corps An agency established to provide volunteer assistance to developing nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Reapportionment The redrawing of election districts to reflect changes in population.
Warren Commission A group that investigated the assassination of Pres. Kennedy and concluded Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the assassination.
