| Cold War | A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted each other. |
| Berlin Airlift | The US flew food and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviet blockaded all ground routes into the city |
| Containment | U.S. policy of resisting further expansion of communism/Soviet influence around the world |
| Korean War | Conflict that began with North Korea's invasion of South Korea and came to involve the U.S. to help resist the spread of communism. |
| Sputnik (1957) | First man-made satellite put into orbit by the Soviet Union |
| Suburbs | residential areas surrounding a city |
| McCarthyism | The act of accusing people (especially in the government) of disloyalty and communism; led by Senator McCarthy |
| HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) | Committee responsible for searching for communists in the movie industry |
| Space Technology | NASA developed technology that has practical applications as well; such as smoke detectors |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | Crisis that arose between the US and the Soviet Union over nuclear missiles in Cuba; JFK responded with a naval blockade of Cuba |
| Great Society | President Johnson's policies of fighting poverty and racial injustice |
| Domino Theory | A theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control. |
| Gulf of Tonkin Resolution | Gave President Johnson full power to take military action in Vietnam |
| 26th Amendment | Lowered the voting age from 21 to 18; because if old enough to fight, old enough to vote |
| Vietnamization | President Nixon's strategy for withdrawal of US troops in Vietnam and replacement of them with South Vietnamese forces |
| Tinker v. Des Moines | Students have the right to freedom of speech at school as long as it is not disruptive |
| Anti-War Movement | This was a protest movement that grew, especially on college campuses, during the Vietnam War |
| Truman Doctrine | President Truman provided aid to any nation resisting communist aggression |
| Marshall Plan | Economic assistance plan ($13 bil) to help rebuild Western European nations |
| NATO | military alliance amongst US, Canada, and Western European nations against threat of Soviet Aggression |
| Baby Boom | large increase in the U.S. population following WWII |
| NASA | U.S. space program developed after the launch of Sputnik |
| Rock & Roll | popular music of the 1950s; led to a generation gap |
| Credibility Gap | growing distrust by many Americans of their government and its statements about the war's progress |
| War Powers Act | limited the president's power over the military |
| Space Race | A competition of space exploration between the United States and Soviet Union that began after the launch of Sputnik |
