| strike | Workers agree to stop working and refuse to return to work until their demands are met. |
| emigrants | One who leaves one's country or region to settle in another. |
| food processing | A method of placing cooked foods in tin cans or glass jars so that foods could be preserved and stored for longer periods of time. |
| department stores | A store keeping a variety of goods which are arranged in several departments. |
| five and dime store | A store at which articles were sold for five or ten cents. |
| telephone | Communication invention by Alexander Graham Bell in the 1870s. |
| typewriter | Hand-operated machine for printing written messages one character at a time. |
